The Evolution of RPG Character Progression Systems

During the 2000s, Western RPGs introduced highly detailed skill trees—seen in games like Diablo II, Knights of the Old Republic, and Borderlands. These systems offered branching choices and impactful customization, shaping modern RPG progression models.

Today, progression systems often blend multiple philosophies: skill trees, class options, perk systems, and equipment-based growth. Modern RPGs aim to give players freedom while keeping progression meaningful, reflecting decades of experimentation and design evolution.
